The Netflix series The Defenders premieres August 18. In preparation, I’m re-watching all the Netflix shows set in the MCU. Right now I’m on Jessica Jones. Below are 10 thoughts I had while watching episode one, “AKA Ladies Night.” Spoilers for the entire MCU, but for this episode in particular.
- So glad I’m getting into Jessica Jones now. This is by far my favorite MCU show.
- From the moment she tossed her client through that window in her office, I knew Jessica was going to be different from any other superhero in the MCU.
- Jessica may be rough around the edges, but she’s actually pretty nice to Malcolm. Much nicer than most people are to drug addicts.
- I feel sorry for Hope’s father. He can’t fix what is really wrong (which is that his daughter is missing), so he’s focusing on what he thinks he can fix (Jessica’s office door).
- The scene where Jessica lifts up Gregory Spheeris’s car is great. It lets us see both Jessica’s strength and her dark sense of humor.
- I’m glad this show added some LGBTQIA+ characters to the MCU, even if I wouldn’t exactly consider the relationships portrayed as healthy or ideal (since Hogarth is cheating on her wife with another woman).
- Jessica and Luke are so great together. I wish we had gotten to see more of him in this, although I understand that they had to save some of his story for his own series.
- She doesn’t seem like the type to scare easily, but Jessica is absolutely terrified. I can only imagine, considering the awful shit Kilgrave did to her.
- I love Trish and Jessica’s friendship so much. They’re always there for each other when it really counts.
- The first time I saw this episode, I foolishly thought it was going to have a happy ending. So you imagine how my heart skipped a beat when I saw Hope pull out that gun.
